April is a graduate of the University of Newcastle, where she earned an Arts Degree majoring in English, a First-Class Honours degree in Music, and a Graduate Diploma in Primary Education.
She also holds a Master of Arts (Music) from Truman State University in the USA.
Since returning to Australia in 2005, she has taught violin and viola to students of all levels and ages, working at the University of Newcastle’s Conservatorium and the Central Coast Conservatorium before joining NECOM in 2009.
She has extensive experience preparing advanced students for AMEB Diploma examinations and Higher School Certificate assessments and has completed three levels of the Australian Kodály Certificate in primary education.
Her approach is deeply rooted in learner-centred teaching, fostering independence and confidence in students by tailoring instruction to their individual needs and goals.
April's teaching interests span a wide range of approaches and methodologies.
She is passionate about classroom music education, chamber music for all skill levels, and incorporating Alexander Technique and body mapping to refine violin and viola technique.
She is also experienced in choral conducting and integrating Kodály pedagogy into choral and instrumental instruction.
Additionally, she applies Dalcroze eurhythmics to instrumental learning and advocates for high-quality music education for all students, including those in public schools and with specific learning needs.
She also specialises in play-based early childhood music education, creating engaging and developmentally appropriate musical experiences that foster a love of learning from an early age.
